    30:29 - 33:14 Perfectly articulated this in such cinematic terms. I feel a disconnect sometimes, but it's when I hear things like this every just seems to sync up, like you said, a part of the same narrative.

    David always felt the most authentic and relatable character to normal people because he was in touch with the 90s trends it‘s always fun to interact with his character! And yes Dylans storylines get more soapier and crazier each season. I wish he was more integrated with the rest of the cast it reminds me of Pacey. Those two didn‘t like college so the writers had to come up with something quick 😂 it feels like the only reason he is in beverly hills is kelly. I wish they gave him and brandon more scenes i always loved them interacting from them being brothers to the rivarly. It is true that Luke and Jason started to ask for more challenging stuff though so that‘s why their storylines are always the most crazy ones

      Comparing college era Dylan to college era Pacey makes a lot of sense. They weren't fully integrated at all lol. Like, Chuck Bass didn't go to college either and spent a lot of time in life or death soapy conflicts too, but at least he was intimately involved with the rest of the characters. Dylan also reminds me a lot of Logan Echolls. Poor Little Rich Boys. I love soapy stories though. I'm always entertained by Dylan. Dylan, or maybe just Luke, had a habit of bringing the best out of the cast. He makes me like Brandon so much more than I ordinarily do. He has had excellent moments with all of them and keeping him so distant is hurting some of the other characters too, because they shine so much in his presence. David is a great character. I think he's emblematic of the nineties. I love the guy.

    I love your love for David and Donna. Easily the most underrated characters. Their arcs and development are never talked about! You made me fall in love with Donna‘s complexities with your videos. Also so glad you are a Dylan and Kelly fan and understand the narrative that they were going for with them being soulmates. Also the actor who played Ray actually got fired because the response was so bad. Aaron hated that the audience thought Donna was stupid for staying with him so he got fired and his music and acting career took a huge nose dive. He actually suffered for many years bc of what Ray did and couldn‘t get jobs in the Industry. The plan was to redeem him in season 6 but it never happened.

      I love Donna and David so much. I am genuinely thrilled that these videos have made you like Donna more. If Donna is proud of me, I'm proud of me. David and Donna are the best. It's a shame about Jamie Walters. All he did was play the character well! He was good as Ray. Based on what I saw in season five, the character was pretty irredeemable. Ray was a solid character and a truly despicable antagonist. I wish it didn't have to ruin a his career. He was an easy character to hate. Nothing wrong with that. The actor didn't do anything wrong. I think I've heard stories about Paul Johansson being attacked/insulted in public, mostly for OTH. Some guys are just great at playing villains. I like a good villain, especially in a teen soap. Dan Scott forever. Ray was hard to simply like. And I adore Dylan and Kelly.

    I started rewatching 90210 for the first time since my early teens a few weeks ago, am on mid season 4 at the moment and it's been shockingly pleasurable and rewarding, yes. I thought the show was just a relic from my early teens, but it's actually genuinely great. I can't agree on David being the best character, though; he's unfortunately my least favorite. I don't mind unlikable characters, but David's descent isn't really interesting to me, just grating. Brenda was my favorite at the time and she remains my favorite now. Shannen Doherty gave us a legendary, timeless character. I will probably watch season 5 as I remember liking Valerie, but Brenda was truly the heart and soul of 90210 for me (even if I love Dylan, Donna and Andrea).

    What I love about Southland Tales is that everyone who watches it has their own interpretation of it, the characters and all the events happening in it. I loved it ever since I first seen the movie back in the year that it had just come out, it gets a lot of things right about the world and some things wrong, but the wrong things can still kinda happen if things in the world keep evolving both in a positive and negative way. Every character in the movie feels real and has their own agenda for what they do in the movie, and we all probably know people in real life that are similar to all those characters in the movie, we know the war torn soldiers, we know extreme activists, we know drug dealers, drug addicts, we know people of all races, religions, sexes, we know the politicians that will say anything just to get elected, we know the narcissistic egotistical Hollywood celebrities and porn stars out there, we know people who form one sided parasocial relationships with celebrities, popular personalities and online personalities, and finally most importantly we all know our place in society. This movie hits you a certain way and is a memorable experience. I’m not a military person and never served, but I find myself humming that memorable catchy song that Pilot Abilene sings, and sing out the lyrics to myself every now and then. 🎶🎶”I got soul, but I’m not a soldier”🎶🎶.

    Beautiful analysis man, as per usual. Season 3 was great, and to be honest I was not expecting season 4 to be just as good. I've finished it last night. The last 3 epsiodes man, ooh, heavy! I found my self weeping, feeling so much pain seeing them all going in seperate ways. It brought back so many memories, and those feelings you experience during "you all time most life altering moments"... Powerful and indeed emotionally draining. I had to start season 5 before going to sleep, to ease my mind. I was cheered up right away seeing Joey's teacher was played by Victor Kulak (of Wet Hot American Summer) :) I remember watching Dawson's Creek from time to time as a kid, I was not even in high school yet when it was aired here in Poland. I liked it, but I was never interested with it enough to keep watching it regularly. Maybe it was too soap operish and sentimental, even bit kitschy to me... Or maybe I was simply just too young, and occupied with spending as much time outside as possible hehe If someone told me back then that 37 years old future me will watch Dawson's Creek with tears in his eyes, I would probably laugh at that person :) I am so glad I am catching up with the series now. Better late then never. Cheers Zack!

    As a person who thought about having children myself, I know drama-instigating people like Abby push some teenagers towards suicide in reality. I had the extreme suicidal feeling as a teenager 1 year before going to high school. So, I avoided people who were like Abby instead of trying to change them like a doormat. People like her cause drama when they feel empty on the inside. But the emptiness never goes away. "All the drugs in this world won't save her from herself." - Marilyn Manson "Coma White" ^ That song is a perfect way to describe Abby. I was a loser in high school that drama-instigating Abby would use for her failed attempt at not feeling empty. Unlike her, I don't use my unhappy emptiness to hurt people regularly. I tend to not like being around people enough as it is. It's seeing humans repeat history over again on my end. Some people end up being like Abby no matter how good their parents raised them. They had a perfect world. But they mess it up because of feeling empty and being too smart for their own good. Abby is a tragedy. Not a happy ending. All the drugs in Abby's world wouldn't save her from herself.

    Pretty sure majority say you really need to only read the 2nd book most because of Weevils story if you watch the cliffhanger of Weevil in the movie without reading the 2nd book you lose all that background story. So it’s the most important to continuing into Season 4 not necessarily the best of the 2 books overall. But the other parts of the books while enjoyable are more standalone & have no real bearing on the continuation into Season 4. Just Weevil backstory & Pony are the only things you really need to know from the books going into the new Season.

    Here’s my take on the ending. Killing Bernie was the second decent thing that Tom did in the movie. The first was sparing Bernie. After Bernie returned and showed his true colors, Tom knew that he would cause Leo too many problems and may endanger Leo. So he killed Bernie to help his friend Leo, even though he knew that Leo would not thank him for it.

    finally someone who sees the triangle for what it is. nobody was an angel i mean brenda cheated aswell with that unseasoned man 🤣 and she lied to him about being french and not having a boyfriend which is even worse. Kelly was her best friend yes but as a viewer it never read that way to me. They were frenemies most of the time always competing in some way and the dk seed has been planted since season 1 with kellys crush and dylan being attracted to her. The whole reason kelly and dylan came to actually be something real is bc the actor wanted it to happen. If you watch season 1 and 2 closely you can always see luke and jennie in the background having fun and improvising things that aren‘t in the script and that‘s something that kept happening. dylan is the one who was the worst in that situation he kept pursuing kelly and saying he didnt care about how brenda felt. That relationship ran its course by season 3.

    • @yourcultboyfriend
      @yourcultboyfriend 14 дней назад

      That's really interesting! I didn't know that Luke and Jennie were personally pushing for this storyline. I know Shannen had difficulties getting along well on the set, but I don't know what her dynamics were like with everyone. I think it all makes her actual performance feel more confrontational even in scenes that aren't supposed to feel that way (which I like very much). If it's a competition of chemistry, then there's truly no contest. Luke and Jennie were pretty electric. I love them together. I wish they selected a more interesting temptation than Dean Cain for Brenda. I never took him seriously. He was simply not a serious contender, not against someone like Luke Perry. And I agree about the frenemy dynamic between Bren and Kelly. I think Kelly fully embodied the beauty standards that were so alien to a brunette girl from Minnesota and that Brenda symbolized an outsider quality that Kelly could never truly possess. They seemed jealous of each other for interesting reasons. They were definitely affectionate, but there was always some tension, which is really common in a lot of seemingly close friendships. I've been loving Beverly Hills, 90210 so far. And there's still so much more to analyze within it.

      @@yourcultboyfriend yes i agree brenda never had a true chance to bounce back from dylan she spend the rest of the show basically mopping around after him. @@yourcultboyfriend i agree! Bren never had a chance to truly bounce back from dylan she basically spend the next season mopping around after him after he fell in love with Kelly. And they should have given her someone she connected with instead of a superficial fling where she only searched for validation. Kelly and Dylan connected on a deep level and became friends before dating. But yes Jennie and Luke were very close even now she still speaks of him very nicely and Shannen‘s character became more alienated from the rest bc of background stuff that happened. Jennie admitted recently that she loved luke so that definitely played into the chemistry they had it felt very real and meta!

  • @peytonsjenedits
    @peytonsjenedits 14 дней назад

    season 3 is probably my favorite season overall! I love how the storylines transcended brenda and dylan and every character became more integrated and evolved. dylan and kelly to me have the most chemistry in this show by far and are also in the top spots of teen drama couples in general. alot of people nowadays hate the dylan and kelly pairing but back then alot of people were on their side and like you said the show needed to evolve and by doing that with the two archetypes of dylan and kelly that usually never would be paired together was brilliant. i love that they did end up together and weren‘t used as an obstacle for the brenda relationship because personally i never found the appeal in that relationship. They didn‘t have much chemistry either imo when they paired him with kelly that‘s when i was blown away at the chemistry like everything they did it just screamed chemistry wether it was a look or a laugh or just standing together. It was a huge surprise when i fell in love with that relationship and i‘m glad you like them too! What‘s your take on the playground scene? Do you believe they are soulmates?

    • @yourcultboyfriend
      @yourcultboyfriend 14 дней назад

      It was a beautiful season! The love triangle was such an important storyline. I loved the playground scene. It demonstrates a lot about Kelly's negative and intrusive thoughts. They're a legendary couple, and I think they're soulmates too. I believe they easily place alongside other teen show soulmates like Lucas/Peyton, Joey/Pacey, Rory/Jess, and Chuck/Blair. I love that it was at a playground because I feel the setting allowed Dylan to be as vulnerable as possible. As if the playground itself appealed to his tortured inner child that seemed to haunt him throughout the season. And Kelly was there and able to soothe that damaged part of him.

    • @peytonsjenedits

      @@yourcultboyfriend i love your take on it! I too believe that they both were the only ones able to understand eachother on a deep level and heal their inner broken souls when they were kids. @RomanPhilosopher 16 дней назад

      ooh and you hated it. thats a bummer. I thought it was a really interesting what if curve ball of an ending, and the finale was interesting in how it mixed a clip show format, which I normally hate, as a form of referencing the characters growth throughout the show and making a large thesis statement with those flashbacks as citations. I loved how it did the sorta dorothy returning from oz bit, but in the end tracy and elena are married and together and alive and noel is alive and getting married... so clearly things did change and the magic worked. I dug it all 4x I've watched it. Sorry you didnt.

    • @yourcultboyfriend
      @yourcultboyfriend 16 дней назад

      Damn, reading your positive thoughts about the season makes me feel kind of bad for going so hard on it in the video. I give you mad respect for wholeheartedly loving the ending. I basically hated everything about it, and that's okay. Clip shows are so difficult to pull off because they're kind of lazy in manifest. I actually just watched a clip show from the third season of Beverly Hills, 90210 that I genuinely appreciated. It's not impossible, but they're super tough to pull off. I was already hating the magical time travel curveball in Felicity, so the clip show series finale felt more like adding insult to injury. The thing that continues to irritate me about the show is that they were asked back for one more arc after they finished, and time traveling warlocks was what they came up with, as if they didn't take it seriously. Or worse - I was misreading Felicity the entire time and it always was that shallow at heart. It's a wild way to end it all, and I'm low-key surprised the ending isn't common knowledge, like infamously known. It's cool that we disagree. I thought that seasons 1 and 3 were pretty impressive. Season 4 was pitifully lacking long before the twist ending. But I honestly loved reading your thoughts here. Hopefully, we'll agree on something else later on.

    • @RomanPhilosopher
      @RomanPhilosopher 13 дней назад

      @@yourcultboyfriend I remember the time travel bit from when it first aired and i loved it then. The What Ifs in life, especially in college are so big, and to get a chance to go back was a fun thought experiment. I think part of maturing into adulthood is accepting that things are the way they are. The Clip show part was kinda annoying to me on my most recent rewatch... but like I said above, I kinda read it as they are citing their evidence in their senior thesis about what the show's story was ultimately all about, it didn't strike me as lazy, but as a way to show how far Felicity and the others had come across 4 and a half years at Uni (the time travel part happens about 6 months into grad school if i recall correctly). It showed Noel's growth too, from being the creep stealing girls passwords and looking to hook up with Ben's girlfriend at any chance, to showing that he wasnt really ready for a serious commitment with Felicity, just like he had issues with Hannah and Ruby and his first wife... but by the time he is getting married to the ad managers daughter in the finale, he has found the right person (seemingly) and hopefully is going to settle down. And Ben... Ben is going to Ben, but he wants to do the right thing and be a good person, Felicity knows that, but she also was at a point where she was tired of his shit when she went back, and she found out how he was her soulmate, because even in the universe where she goes out of her way to leave him for Noel, she ends up back with him. I liked the butterfly effect of the time travel too and how at the end, the status quo is largely restored, except for the journey felicity and the audience went through to get there. That Ben said the same thing at the end of the time travel and on the return was so... Ben. Just curious, when you were watching the show were you team Noel? Are you unhappy that she ended up back with Ben in the end or was the clip aspect what hurt it for you more? One thing to keep in mind about the finale is that when it was released they didnt even do DVD releases of all shows, and binging wasn't a consideration. The clips from season 1 outside of reruns aired here or there from old seasons would've been stuff most people hadn't seen in 3 years. So showing the clips was a good way to get the audience back up to speed. If you binged all 80 or so episodes over a month, then yeah, you still remember that stuff and it will come off as more boring for replaying what you've already seen. The thing I hated most about season 4 going off of memory is Ben's Dad's Sponsor... the same actress that starred in house. Everything about her character I hated. But I was team Ben since like 1999. I loved Megan and Sean getting married, and Sean actually getting into business and not just being landlord to a bunch of kids while brainstorming ideas. I liked Megan's transformation into Jackie O. I didnt like Elena back with Tracey, I wanted her and DeForest to try and make it work. I liked Noel's arch. I liked Javier as a character a lot more 25 years ago than I do today. Him in drama class or whatever was something I could do without. The other thing I really liked about the time travel bit was the hair work. I know thats silly. but you can almost tell what season or half of a season you are at by the length and style of Felicity's hair. They did a great job with the time travel of winding her hair back. Most of season 4, especially the second half she was straightening her hair, but with the flashback it was back to the medium length ringlets. There were a lot of other subtle changes that made the time jump spell more convincing... and felicity being put in a psyche ward for the things she was saying sounding insane... that was a bit more realistic than most shows would do with the time travel premise... granted breaking out of it was more far fetched... Sorry for writing a book. I'll just say in conclusion though. That this is by far the best ending JJ has done on a show or movie. You may hate it. But its better than Rise of Skywalker, the end of Lost, etc, right?

    I understood the point of the Walsh parents was that they were boring. It was part of the characters of Brandon and Brenda and a way to contrast them to the slightly crazy parents of the other main characters.

    • @yourcultboyfriend
      @yourcultboyfriend 19 дней назад

      That's a cool way to look at it. I guess I didn't like how much screen time they had. Sometimes a show can make being boring or normal a virtue, but the Walsh parents lack a certain amount of charm to pull that off. I'd call Brandon frighteningly normal, but not boring. And I wouldn't call Brenda either of those things. Brandon and Brenda also had buckets of charm between them. I guess the only fair comparison would be something like My So-Called Life. The parents were kind of boring at first, but they eventually became dynamic and empathetic. Maybe the Walsh parents will get more complicated as the series goes on, and I hope they do. During the first two seasons, they're kind of lifeless imo. Thank you for watching my video. And I do appreciate the way you explained the importance of the Walsh parents. That it's in how they contrast, which is necessary to the overall point of the show itself. I will say that I don't mind the partly antagonistic dynamic that Dylan has with Jim Walsh. It at least contrasts in a way that leads to some okay drama.

    I think one of the most profound scenes with religious tones is when Agnes dies and she's laid out like Christ on the cross in her bed and her sisters reposition her. It's followed up by the priest who tells us that, like Christ, Agnes is the sacrifice for the rest of them. Also the ending shows that no matter what demons we face or overcome, we all go back to our lives as they were before.

    I always think about how De Palma definitely wishing he made Chinatown. Arguably the most acclaimed non-Hitchcock directed Hitchcockian film. I wish he did too, given Polanski is a piece of shit. I think De Palma has made a couple movies better than Chinatown though.

    I feel like it could be argued that the tv mini series could be considered a precursor to the style of television we see now with streaming shows and prestige television. Short precise tv shows with an ending in mind. The creators knowing the destination from the start. Of course the TV miniseries were still structured with commercials in mind. Which still kept their foot planted in the realm of the television medium. For example, when you look at the 1979 Salem’s lot, it’s three hours. If it had been a theatrical film, most of what’s in there would’ve been cut. What’s in the 1979 was wide what you get from the television landscape this sort of voyeuristic experience with the characters day-to-day lives. If that makes sense. I love Igby Goes down that’s one of my favorite movies.

    i couldn’t agree more on the point about Genz making fun of teen shows nowadays. Something that‘s lost these days in teen shows and tv in general is that they lack vulnerability and they approach topics with the most i dont care attitude. Even when they try to be edgy and tackle serious topics like in euphoria i‘m just asking myself where is the sensitivity? where is the time to digest everything and make what happens have an impact on the viewer? I dont think it‘s the viewers fault too i think it‘s the Industries because as you said dawsons creek and beverly hills were always looked at as bad tv and made fun of. Adolescence is always seen as uncomfortable and cringy but the difference is the people who made these shows back then especially williamson wasn‘t afraid to show how teenagers actually felt. It wasn‘t about the facts it was about how it felt in the moment and that‘s what adolescence is all about. joeys monologue in the penultimate episode encapsulates it all perfectly she says she can‘t say that it all happened the way she remembered it but that‘s how it felt. This is what‘s missing in todays shows. The summer i turned pretty does it fairly well i guess but they need more episodes. Genz needs to start being okay with being cringe and liking things that are hyper sensitive and aware of it while not only accepting but embracing it. Thats the whole point of tv

    Did Mikey have empathy towards Nicky’s dire situation? Or at this point does Mikey hold so much disdain for what Nicky had become and feels next to nothing for him? This is the question in my mind.

    Never watched Felicity, but this reminds me a bit of the infamous ending of St. Elsewhere, where it was revealed the whole show was a fantasy inside the head of an autistic child. The difference is where St. Elsewhere's ending was more of a deliberate rug-pull joke that wilfully alienated audiences after the show had become formulaic, Felicity's shenanigans seemed to be played far more earnest and straight, as I don't think Abrams has that kind of impulse at all, despite him being a huge part of modern corporate cynicism

    I am surprised you go to the cinema once a year :)) Although it's understandable, considering your thougths on the matter., and the fact you seem to be so fed up with all this sh*t haha. I am trying to go to cinemas as much as I can, despite all the issues with the art form and the industry you've mentioned in this clip. I at least do my best to watch on a big screen any movie I am interested in, especially the genre movies or some smaller intendent flicks. I am lucky enough here in Wroclaw, Poland it's afordable, and I do not have to travel long disnatnces to cinema, like it often happens in States. In my hometown have few different mall multiplexes, few oldschool theaters and one ex multpilex transformed into indeptendent cinema, supported by some European Union grants. They screen a lot of international movies, which you would never seen in a regular cinema. Maybe this is why I have bit more faith in the medium ;) I still find huge value in theatre experiecne, and I truly think there still are decent films out there. Obviously everything youi said in your stream is valid, and I agree with you to some extend. Sooner or later it will crush, and the change will come from the underground. It seems to always work in such cycles. I know, I know it's a such a truism, but I guess it's true. Cheers man!
